What’s New at the Plum Beach Lighthouse?

As a direct result from the sales of the PBL Plates, the lighthouse was repainted during the summer of 2010. Workers from Abcore Restoration of Narragansett, RI, spent weeks removing old paint and rust scale from the iron on the exterior walls of the lighthouse. Once the bare iron was exposed, it was immediately sealed with epoxy to prevent rusting. The lighthouse was then repainted in its day mark color of black, white and brown. The solar-powered florescent lights that light the tower at night were replaced by new LED lights which use one-third the power. Finally, the flag pole was installed where the furnace smokestack once stood. The flag pole and flag were offered at wholesale to the Friends by Narragansett Flags.

Restoring the Lighthouse

In August and September 2010, workers from Abcore Restoration of Narragansett removed old paint and scale from the lighthouse to prepare the surfaces for the new paint, a job directly paid for by license plate sales.

Plummy, the Plum Beach Lighthouse Mascot

Plummy, the official mascot of the Plum Beach Lighthouse greets admirers while Marching at the 2010 Wickford Memorial Day Parade. Plummy makes appearances regularly at local parades, fairs and festivals to promote the lighthouse and license plate.

The First Run of the PBL License Plate

On June 23, 2010, the first run of 1642 license plates were made at the state prison. The plates are offered by the Friends as a fundraiser to benefit the lighthouse, and the group was able to raise enough that the lighthouse was repainted in 2010. Any funds now raised by plate sales will be applied to the ongoing maintenance of the lighthouse.
